Gonzalo Guerrero

This is a very quick sketch I did about one of my favorite Mexican history's characters. His name was Gonzalo Guerrero, a Spaniard who arrived to Mexican coasts just before the Spanish conquest. He was first captured as a slave, and little by little he climbed upward in the indian society until he became a chief warrior and married an indian woman with whom he had two children. With that, he's considered the one who initiated Mexican crossbreeding. When he knew that the Spanish soldiers were coming to conquer the territories where he lived, he tought the indians about the Spaniards' ways and war strategies and led them into battle against them. That's how during that period, many of the attacks upon those indian territories were frustrated, and the indians there were more difficult to defeat.

Besides having a wonderful story, Gonzalo Guerrero is special to me because it was thanks to my interest about his life that I decided to make a small and amateur comic book about him 10 years ago, and it was thanks to that comic that I came to meet my colleagues and family at Ka-Boom! Estudio.

About 4 years ago, Gonzalo Guerrero specialist, Salvador Campos Jara, from Huelva, Spain, asked my permission to use those drawings for his doctorate thesis. I agreed for him to use them, and this week, a documentary about Gonzalo Guerrero was released at TVUNAM and the National Geographic Channel, ("Entre Dos Mundos: La historia de Gonzalo Guerrero"), in which Salvador appears. Also, thanks to the documentary and the drawings, I was able to contact histoy consultant Mauro I. Barea, who also participated in the documentary. A really wonderful production which I recommend you all to watch.

So... yeah, I got excited and happy about the documentary, about Salvador, Mauro and Guerrero, heh, so I couldn't resist doing this very quick sketch tonight, for the memory of those good times. And I'm definitely thinking about perhaps doing a graphic novel in the future about Gonzalo Guerrero because his story is just SO AWESOME.

Un boceto muy rápido que hice acerca de uno de mis personajes históricos mexicanos favoritos. Su nombre es Gonzalo Guerrero, un español que llegó a las costas mexicanas poco antes de la conquista española. Primero fue capturado y hecho esclavo, pero poco a poco fue escalando en la sociedad indígena hasta convertirse en un jefe guerrero; se casó con una mujer indígena con quien tuvo dos hijos, y con ello, está considerado como el padre del mestizaje mexicano. Cuando supo que los soldados españoles iban a llegar a conquistar los territorios donde él y su familia habitaban, les enseñó a los indígenas acerca de las costumbres españolas y sus métodos de guerra y los lideró en batalla contra ellos. Fue así como, durante ese período, los ataques contra esos territorios indígenas fueron frustrados y dichos nativos fueron más difíciles de vencer para los españoles.

Aparte de tener una historia increíble, Gonzalo Guerrero es especial para mí porque fue gracias a mi interés por su historia que hace diez años hice un pequeño y amateur cómic acerca de él, y fue gracias a ese cómic que conocí a mis colegas y familia de ¡Ka-Boom! Estudio.

Hace 4 años, el especialista sobre Gonzalo Guerrero, Salvador Campos Jara, de Huelva, España, pidió mi permiso para utilizar esos dibujos en su tesis doctoral. Le permití que los usara, y esta semana, un documental sobre Gonzalo Guerrero fue estrenado en  TVUNAM y el National Geographic Channel ("Entre Dos Mundos: La historia de Gonzalo Guerrero"), ¡en el cual aparece el mismísimo Salvador!. También, gracias al documental y a los dibujos, tuve la oportunidad de contactar a Mauro I. Barea, quien también participó como consultor histórico del documental. Una producción increíble que recomiendo que la vean.

Así que... pues sí, me emocioné mucho con el documental, y por Salvador, Mauro y Guerrero, je, así que no pude resistir hacer este rápido sketch esta noche, por la memoria de aquellos buenos tiempos. Y definitivamente estoy pensando en hacer una novela gráfica de Gonzalo Guerrero en un futuro porque su historia en verdad es FASCINANTE.
